WATERSTONES - The Paradise of Books is in Piccadilly English Level B2

It is easy to walk by this building and not realise its significance for 20th century architecture. This was the first shop in Britain to have an interrupted curved-glass front. Occupying a beautiful art deco building, formerly Simpsons' department store, in the heart of London's West End, Waterstones Piccadilly offers six huge floors of books with over 200,000 unique titles.

The interior was designed to domestic proportions as a series of rooms with an open-well staircase. The shop was originally commissioned by Alexander Simpson, during the very early 1970s the writer Jeremy Lloyd was employed as an assistant. In 1999 the shop was sold to Waterstone's and is now their flagship store, on the top floor of which is a bar conveniente located next to the "Art and Architecture' section. There is truly something to be found for even the most discerning of readers, from the flagship Fiction, Travel, History and Art sections or from across the wider branch. We are especially proud of our Children's section, modelled on a (Piccadilly) Circus theme and full of activities and events as well as the latest releases and old favourites.

From the comfort of the bar there is a wonderful view south, over the rooftops towards the Palace of Westminster.
